Same-Day Crowns in Rancho Santa Margarita: How One Visit Replaces Two
A crown used to mean two visits, a few weeks apart. First, the dentist shaped your tooth and took a goopy impression. Then you went home with a plastic temporary crown and waited for a lab to make the real one. If the temporary popped off in the meantime, you made a third trip. At SoCal Prime Dentistry in Rancho Santa Margarita, most patients who need a crown can now skip all of that. With same-day crown technology, Dr. Mayank Sharma can design, make, and place your permanent crown in a single appointment. This guide explains how it works, who it fits, and what to expect.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a custom cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It brings back the tooth's shape, strength, and look, and it protects what is left of the natural tooth underneath.
Dr. Sharma may recommend a crown when:
- A cavity is too large for a filling to hold
- A tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken
- You just had a root canal and the tooth needs protection
- An old, large filling is wearing out or leaking
- A tooth is badly worn down from grinding
Crowns are part of our general dentistry care, and they are one of the most common ways to save a tooth that would otherwise keep breaking down. The American Dental Association has a helpful overview of dental crowns if you want to read more.
How Do Same-Day Crowns Work?
Same-day dental crowns use CEREC technology. CEREC pairs a digital scanner with an in-office milling unit, so the whole process happens in our Rancho Santa Margarita office instead of an outside lab.
Here is what a typical visit looks like:
- Numbing and prep. Dr. Sharma numbs the area, removes any decay or damaged tooth, and shapes the tooth so the crown fits.
- Digital scan. Instead of a tray of impression putty, a small wand takes a 3D scan of your tooth and bite. Most patients find this much more comfortable.
- Design. Dr. Sharma designs your crown on screen, matching its shape and bite to your other teeth.
- Milling. The design goes to our in-office mill, which carves your crown from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic.
- Placement. Dr. Sharma checks the fit and bite, then bonds the crown in place.
Most same-day crown visits take about two to three hours from start to finish. You can relax in the chair, read, or listen to something while your crown is being made.
Why Choose a Same-Day Crown?
The biggest benefit is time. One visit means one round of numbing, one afternoon away from work, and one trip to the office. There are other perks, too:
- No temporary crown. Temporaries can feel bulky, break, or fall off. With a same-day crown, you leave with your permanent crown.
- No impression putty. The digital scan is quick and easier for people with a strong gag reflex.
- A natural look. Ceramic crowns are shaded to match your nearby teeth, so they blend in.
- A precise fit. Digital design helps the crown match your bite closely.
For busy parents, commuters, and anyone who has a hard time getting time off, saving a second appointment makes a real difference.
Is a Same-Day Crown Right for Me?
Many patients are good candidates, but every tooth is different. Dr. Sharma will look at your tooth, your bite, and your X-rays before recommending a plan.
Sometimes a crown is more than you need. If the damage is moderate, an inlay or onlay can repair the tooth while saving more of its natural structure. If the damage is small, a simple dental filling may be enough.
Other times, the tooth needs care before a crown can go on. If the nerve inside the tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment first. The crown then protects the tooth after the root canal. If a tooth cannot be saved, Dr. Sharma can talk with you about implant dentistry options.
The goal is always the right treatment for your tooth, not just the fastest one. Dr. Sharma will walk you through your options and answer your questions before any work begins.
What Should I Expect After My Crown?
Your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours, so wait until the numbness wears off before you eat. Some patients notice mild sensitivity for a few days. This usually fades on its own.
For the first day, it helps to:
- Chew on the other side when you can
- Skip very sticky or very hard foods
- Brush and floss as usual, gently around the new crown
If your bite feels high or uneven once the numbness is gone, give us a call. A quick adjustment can fix it.
A crown cannot get a cavity, but the tooth underneath still can, mostly along the edge where the crown meets the tooth. Daily brushing and flossing, plus regular visits for preventive dentistry, help your crown last for many years. If you grind your teeth, a custom night guard can protect both your crown and your natural teeth.
How Much Does a Same-Day Crown Cost?
Cost depends on the tooth, the work it needs, and your insurance. Many dental plans cover part of a crown when it is needed to restore a damaged tooth. Our team can check your benefits before treatment, so you know what to expect. Visit our dental insurance page to learn more.
If you do not have insurance or want to spread out the cost, we offer in-office membership options and third-party financing. See our dental financing page for details.
