A cracked molar at dinner. A son's front tooth on the soccer field at Lake Forest Sports Park. A throbbing ache that wakes you up at 2 a.m. in your Mission Viejo home. Dental emergencies do not schedule themselves around your week, and the difference between saving a tooth and losing one often comes down to how quickly you reach the right dentist. If you live in Mission Viejo or Lake Forest, SoCal Prime Dentistry is a short drive up the 241 toll road or down Santa Margarita Parkway, and Dr. Mayank Sharma reserves time every day for urgent cases.

This guide walks you through what counts as a true dental emergency, what to do in the first 30 minutes, when to come straight to the office, and how the team at SoCal Prime Dentistry treats urgent visits for patients across south Orange County.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health problem that requires immediate professional care to relieve pain, stop bleeding, prevent infection, or save a tooth. Waiting until Monday is not an option for these situations.

You should call an emergency dentist right away if you are experiencing any of the following:

A knocked-out permanent tooth, a cracked or broken tooth with sharp edges or visible nerve, severe and constant tooth pain, swelling in the face or jaw, a dental abscess that looks like a pimple on the gum, uncontrolled bleeding after an injury, a lost crown or filling that exposes sensitive tissue, or a wisdom tooth flare-up with fever and swelling.

Mild sensitivity, a small chip with no pain, or a dull ache that comes and goes can usually wait one or two business days. When in doubt, call SoCal Prime Dentistry at (949) 713-1606 and the team will help you decide whether to come in immediately or schedule for the next available slot.

What Should You Do If a Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

Time is the single most important factor. A permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is reimplanted within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. More than five million teeth are knocked out every year in children and adults, and proper emergency action can allow the tooth to be replanted successfully and last for years to come.

Here is exactly what to do:

  1. Find the tooth. Pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), never by the root.

  2. Rinse gently with milk or saline. Do not scrub, do not use soap, and avoid plain tap water if you have any other option. Tap water damages the delicate root cells.

  3. Try to put it back in the socket. Hold it in place by biting gently on a clean piece of gauze or a soft cloth.

  4. If reinsertion is not possible, keep it moist. Place the tooth in a cup of milk, or tuck it inside the cheek of an adult patient. The American Dental Association recommends keeping a knocked-out tooth moist at all times by placing it back in the socket without touching the root, between the cheek and gums, in milk, or in a tooth preservation product.

  5. Call SoCal Prime Dentistry immediately at (949) 713-1606 and head straight to our Rancho Santa Margarita office. From most parts of Mission Viejo or Lake Forest, you can reach us in 10 to 15 minutes.

For young patients, a knocked-out baby tooth should never be reimplanted, because that can damage the developing adult tooth underneath. Bring your child in for an evaluation either way.

Can You See an Emergency Dentist on Saturday in Mission Viejo or Lake Forest?

Yes. SoCal Prime Dentistry is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., which makes us one of the few practices in south Orange County offering true weekend availability for urgent care. Most dental emergencies that happen Friday night or early Saturday morning can be seen the same day.

Dr. Sharma also reserves time during the weekday schedule for patients in pain, so calling first thing in the morning often gets you in by lunch. If you are calling outside of business hours, leave a clear message describing the issue and the team will respond as soon as the office opens. How Do You Manage Severe Tooth Pain Before Your Appointment?

While you are waiting to be seen, a few simple steps can take the edge off pain and reduce swelling:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water) to clean the area and reduce bacteria.

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen at the dose listed on the bottle. Never place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, because it burns the soft tissue.

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. This is especially helpful for swelling from an injury or abscess.

  • Floss gently around the painful tooth in case food or debris is causing pressure.

  • Avoid very hot, very cold, or hard foods until you are evaluated.

If pain is paired with fever, facial swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing, that is a sign of a spreading infection, and you should contact SoCal Prime Dentistry immediately or proceed to the nearest emergency room.

Should You Go to the ER or an Emergency Dentist?

For most dental problems, an emergency dentist is the right call. A hospital emergency room can manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but ER physicians cannot perform a root canal, replant a knocked-out tooth, or place a permanent crown. That means an ER visit usually buys you a few hours of relief and a bill that is often higher than a comparable dental visit.

Choose the ER instead when there is uncontrolled bleeding that will not stop after 15 minutes of pressure, a suspected broken jaw, facial trauma alongside the dental injury, or swelling that is interfering with your breathing. In every other case, calling Dr. Sharma directly will get you better, faster, more definitive treatment.

What to Expect at Your Emergency Visit at SoCal Prime Dentistry

Walking into a dental office in pain can feel overwhelming. Here is how an urgent visit at SoCal Prime Dentistry typically unfolds:

  1. Quick check-in. Our front desk team handles paperwork and insurance verification while you are being seated, so you are not filling out forms while you hurt.

  2. Focused exam and digital imaging. Dr. Sharma uses digital X-rays and intraoral imaging to pinpoint the source of the problem within minutes.

  3. Honest diagnosis and clear options. You will hear exactly what is happening, what your treatment choices are, and what each one costs before anything begins. Patients consistently mention this transparency in our reviews.

  4. Same-visit treatment when possible. Many emergencies can be resolved in a single visit, including temporary fillings, simple extractions, abscess drainage, and reattachment of crowns. More complex cases like root canals, full implants, or oral surgery may be staged across two appointments. Learn more on our oral surgery page.

  5. Comfort throughout. For anxious patients or longer procedures, sedation options are available. Read about sedation dentistry at SoCal Prime if you have ever avoided urgent care because of dental fear.

Spanish-speaking staff are on hand for Spanish-preferring patients and their families.

Will Insurance Cover Your Emergency Visit?

Most dental insurance plans include coverage for emergency exams, diagnostic X-rays, and many common urgent treatments. Coverage levels vary by plan, so the team at SoCal Prime Dentistry verifies your benefits at check-in and gives you a written estimate before treatment begins.

If you do not have insurance, or if your plan leaves a significant out-of-pocket balance, financing is available through CareCredit and other plans designed to spread payments over time. Visit our financing page or our insurance page for the latest information, or simply ask when you call. We offer our own in-house insurance plan for both regular and emergency visits, helping you get the care you need at a discounted rate.

Cost should never be the reason you delay care for a true emergency. A knocked-out tooth replanted within an hour is dramatically less expensive than the implant required to replace a tooth that was lost because care was delayed.

Why Mission Viejo and Lake Forest Patients Choose SoCal Prime Dentistry

Patients across south Orange County have a lot of options, but a few things consistently bring Mission Viejo and Lake Forest residents through our doors:

Dr. Mayank Sharma, DDS, FAGD, FICD is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a credential earned by fewer than 7 percent of general dentists nationwide and one that requires hundreds of hours of continuing education plus a rigorous examination. He is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, an honor recognizing leadership and ethical practice in the profession. That depth of training matters most in an emergency, when a single visit may involve diagnosis, restoration, and follow-up planning all at once.

Beyond credentials, the practice is built around the patient's experience. Reviews from neighbors in Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, and Rancho Santa Margarita consistently mention three things: how quickly the team gets people in, how clearly Dr. Sharma explains options, and how no one feels pressured into treatments they do not need.
